Universities in Support of Wounded, Injured and Sick Service Personnel Programme improved after client feedback
UNSWIS is a network of around 50 Universities who support wounded, injured or sick veterans, and those who face a barrier to employment.
Clients can apply for different activity types, tailored on a case by case basis, to help inform on employment or education options.
The Universities in Support of Wounded, Injured and Sick Service Personnel Programme (UNSWIS) Programme was incorporated into RFEA‘s portfolio in 2017. Thanks to a grant from Help for Heroes, the Programme has had a dedicated manager since January 2018. A review of the Programme gathered feedback from a range of stakeholders and the resulting improvements include greater clarity about what the Programme offers.
UNSWIS Activities available are:
- Taster Visit – a role/department specific visit or meeting.
- Work Placement – a role/department-specific work placement that lasts at least a week or more. Note, this doesn’t guarantee employment!
- Advisory Visit – Education: to explore education and studying opportunities at the University, life as a student experience, campus exposure etc.
- Advisory Visit – Employment: to explore employment opportunities within the University
The programme is open to any medically discharged Service leaver and military veterans facing barriers to employment.
Clients will also benefit from the support of a dedicated Careers or Employment Adviser/Consultant.
Jemma Jones, UNSWIS Programme Manager, said: “We are really pleased with the progress we have made since reviewing the programme thanks to the unwavering support of UNSWIS Co-Founder Professor David Rose and funding from Help for Heroes. We continue to see positive results from user feedback and hope that user application numbers continue to increase.”
User feedback reports that 100% of users are “very satisfied” with their UNSWIS activity. A recently medically-discharged client who attended an Advisory Visit at Teesside University said: “[UNSWIS] has helped me decide which avenue to go down out of the many potential avenues available. The meeting provided me with information and insight that’s not readily available through other sources. I think the UNSWIS Programme is fantastic.”
